The actual act of Paton lifting me from the bed and into his arms was painful enough to make the room spin around me, but once settled against his chest, I was quite sure the momentary pain was worth it.

Where was the tall, strapping man to carry me around my apartment back home?

The castle hallways were long and winding, so I had plenty of time to enjoy the feeling of his muscles pressed against my face as he held me tight against him.

The man was abnormally good looking, and the more time I spent with him, the more I realized that he was also abnormally kind. He was the sort of man that if I’d met him in my own time—if men such as this even existed then—I’d be in trouble.

When we did finally reach Paton’s room and we stepped inside, my jaw visibly went slack from shock. It was the most exquisite and large bedroom I’d ever seen. Furs lay across the cold stone floors, and a fire taller than me roared in the massive fireplace in front of several beautiful wooden chairs in the corner. The bed was at least twice the size of the one I’d been in before, and the luscious look of it had me dying to get inside.

“Wow.”

“’Tis better, aye? No’ a cobweb to be found in here, lass.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“’Twas my parents’ place of refuge for one another when they were alive. I have tried to honor their love of this room while also making it me own.”

He carried me over to the bed and laid me back into a mattress that rivaled any I’d slept on in my own time.

“I am so verra sorry for Bram’s delay, lass. I can only assume the healer must be with someone else in the village whose need is greater. I know ye are in need of relief from yer pain. Would ye take a drink, lass? ’Twould help, I am certain.”

I would’ve let him shoot me with a horse tranquilizer if he thought it would help with the pain. And had I known there was alcohol readily available, I would’ve gotten myself good and toasted hours ago. Anything to numb me from the constant throbbing.

“I would love one. The stronger, the better.”

Paton laughed and walked across the room. “We shall see about that, lass. I doona expect ye will be accustomed to drink as stout as this.”

When he brought me the dram and extended the amber liquid toward me, the smell alone was enough to tell me he was right.

“Bottoms up.” I smiled as I threw back the drink, and nearly immediately threw it back up at him. The only thing that stopped me was the pain such a motion would cause my ribs.

Paton began to laugh. “I did warn ye.”

I coughed as the liquid continued to burn its way down my throat. “That’s not alcohol. That’s fire starter.”

“Would ye like another?”

I couldn’t very well allow my survival of the first drink to be for nothing. I was at least going to get some pain relief out of it.
